I'm not a doctor, but, I am an engineer and even i would have said a metal on metal ball joint in an environment like the human body, would be too prone to failure. Even if its high grade, self lubricating composite. With the type of ball joint, under the uneven riggers of a human hip... I would be very concerned. I assume the components are manufactured as powdered metallurgy in a fine non toxic lubricant bath. But, in order to get the balance of lubrication to materiel hardness level right for zero particulate abrasion... It would, without doubt require extensive testing and approval .... or apparently not!

Doctors don't know about the approval of medical devices , BECAUSE IT ISN'T THEIR JOB TO! Its falls under the responsibility of the HHS via the FDA. Doctors should look for the HHS stamp of approval and be safe in the knowledge that they can get on with their job of looking after patents... Stop putting everything on doctors. I swear this country is falling apart from the inside out. As far as I can see it's a mixture of general disorganization caused by their being too many chiefs and willful buck passing negligence, because lets face it, It isn't profitable to have strong clear standards.

I'd be afraid to learn that malpracticioners studying to use medical devices to alter peoples' features for their secret agendas to entertain the idea of espionage and causing oppsies to sarcasticly apologize and act like thats not defamation by malpractice and a stupid apology supposed to clean up improper functions that caused an easily avoidable technique causing a traumatic ordeal. Thorough background checks for proper credentials to be practicing medicine for students of healthcare are extremely important. The time that we live in, people from out of nowhere shouldn't be tinkering around with peoples' medical records or even trying to pry their greedy ways to falsely diagnose people needing of proper conceltation and healthcare. Even if it is corrective surgery. An agreement of the process should be explained properly to the patient and no changes in processes should ever be taken while the patient is under anesthesia. The blood-type of the doctor should also be taken note of. For someone with a blood-type not comparable to the patient could be second guessing ideas to use out of context on a possible victim of malpractice. Getting hurt and not being properly taken care of by doctors and physicians to explain why and what happened to the patient can easily be overlooked by malpracticioners. They don't like to blow up a dirty doctors laundry out in the open because it would be humiliating and hard to find a well paying debt-free job. Some individuals look very entitled and super important outside of work, that's not the type of person you'd want playing boardgame, 'Operation', with your body or even your mouth! Doctors that write their hypothesis and proof their theories are good-students that don't need to teach others not serious about the craft of healing. Wasting money to get malpracticed on by a random know-how is a serious lawsuit waiting to happen. If my doctor is learning on the job, why didn't they attend school to practice on dummies instead of practicing on real life people without the okay to go. If a doctor that dropped out of school and didn't attend the proper college to be practicing medicine is ripping around in somebodys person why were they even there in the first place, what honest business hires malpracticioners to make peoples' wrongs worse? None; guilty by association is always a go to. Being a doctor is supposed to be an honest job, not about money and laughing at patients because they let a dunce practice on them. Quick fixes are not allowed and anyone fixing someones body like a automobile is totally in the wrong field of study. Quickly diagnosing patients, taking the wrong steps by choice, and letting a patient heal thinking everything's okay because a new doctor says so has been malpracticed on. They'll be left going to a second opinion to figure out how a very simple surgery was complicated because of techniques not needed to be taken. Having a random know-how to install a foreign object into a persons' body can not be safe. Some malpracticioners are prone to missing pieces being stuck in their patients body, all they'll say, "it's biodegradable and totally safe". Those people don't mean to cure or heal any ailment. Life at a mature age isn't meant to be taken for granted and patients shouldn't be sarcasticly talked to when attempting to install foreign objects that have severe effects by having a certain purpose to assist in living a quality life. If the object fails while in the patients body, that could be a lawsuit for the malpractisioner depending on the patient and the pain and suffering they're being forced to withstand because of their trust being betrayed by a "doctor". I bet some people didn't know malpractisioners do go to jail, and their families too get investigated on their attitudes and lifes' purposes. It's disgusting what people; that should be working at a hardware store; would do to a person asking to be healed! Gross lengths male-shovenists would go just to get a peekaboo of a woman's vagina. Personally... there's adult film. Being a pervert in a professional learned setting is obviously a wrong route to take to snoop around work places for the man. Going to a professional hospital is the best way to get an opinion and even multiple opinions whether or not to go through "special" surgeries. My friend wanted a penis-enlargement... he just snipp't his lager. What a joke, be happy with what your mother gave you! STOP MALPRACTICING!!! Kids stay in school and don't talk to strange men.

There's another problem that it discussed here... I have a medical device that I need for a health condition (that I won't go into because... gross and personal) but the company who makes it tried to market it as a cool Convenient thing for people who don't desperately need it like me... but for people without health issues it's annoying and many of them hate it. So they collected all of the complaints from people they marketed it to who don't need it and are discontinuing it, even though I need it to function and find it works perfectly for me. So I guess I'm just out of luck because of their misguided advertising.

While it's true that there are certainly charletons out there who will release products without proper testing, only looking to make a quick buck, there are also many out there working in the medical device industry who DO genuinely care about helping patients and improving lives. Please don't lump everyone working into medical device industry together simply because there are greedy idiots out there.

We need to find a happy medium. We can go the other way and stifle innovation. And the worst part about it is that the problem will be unseen. At least with overly lax standards, you can see the problem and know to be alert. With overly strict standards, there's nothing that you can really do except maybe go the a country where the standards are less strict.

My mom had that hip. But the doctor installed it wrong, so instead of rubbing, the socket just wasn't attached, so she had horrible pain for 2 years, doctors told her it was her back and wanted to do spinal surgery, and when they finally found out it was the hip, she had escaped cobalt poisoning. So, two bad luck events got canceled out to one less-bad bad.

Thank you John Oliver, the warning Ad on the ERCP procedure and duodenal scopes is real and so is the deadly bacteria they harbor because they can not be sterilized, only “high level disinfected”... this brought such national attention that we now have a single use one on the market. Aka bacteria free! So if you are reading this and your loved one needs to have an ercp procedure, ask your doctor if they can use a “single-use duodenalscope.

18:23 Idk how the shows cool with that joke but feels the need to treat people like idiots with "opossum" trigger warnings lmao! Poor baby, getting put on blast for being hideous when hes barely an infant, if hes ugly now I can't imagine how terrible his high school days will be. All jokes aside, a simple "viewer discretion" at the start of the show would suffice, like it always has. If people watched anyway and their eyes caught a glimpse of something than thats on them.

As a biomedical engineering student, it hurts me to see patients get hurt. However, the regulation work is just not that simple. In order to produce scientifically sound result, and catch all potential problems, a clinical trial can and probably should last years, and cost is easily in the tens of millions of dollars. Compound the development failure rate, it would be hard for companies to justify investing into innovation. Further, 510(k) allows a lot of less critical devices to be cleared. When a company produce a similar enough device to a existing device, and the failure of the device is not a cause of immediate or serious health concern, it would be unfair to require a clinical trial for it. So getting rid of 510(k) completely would block off a lot if innovations. That's not to say 510(k) is a perfect process. It allows new, low risk device that shows "significant equivalence" to an existing device to be cleared for marketing. However, the term "significance equivalence" needs a lot more enforcement mechanism. For example, I would argue the metal-on-metal hip replacement is not "significantly equivalent" to previous devices. Metal-on-plastic hip replacement allows the harder metal to wear down the softer polymer, and shed harmless particles. However, metal-on-metal hip doesn't have the same mechanism to prevent shedding of metallic particles. So 510(k) does need to be revised to allow FDA to better regulate cleared devices, and ensure they are safe and effective.

So patients in Murica are suffering and/or dying, because the government agency tasked with supervising the development of medical equipment is lazy and incompetent, and companies are more interested in making money than in helping people. What a *huge* surprise! That makes me really happy to live in Europe, where the EU has agonizingly detailed (and sometimes really annoying) rules and guidelines for everything, from toilet paper to car tyres, from filling material for pillows to ingredient lists on food packages, and yes ... they actually make sure your pacemaker doesn't shock you to death and your artificial hip doesn't make your flesh rot.

Fun fact, i used to work for a company in the field of prosthetics. There we had yearly fda audits in order to legally sell those to the US. Funner fact those audits where rigorous and a joke at the same time. The took appart one line of products but the company was allowed to choose which one, meaning that wether all the products met fda standards was entirely up to the companies goodwill. that said, lawsuits because a prosthetic leg malfunctioned are not fun for big companies so theyll make sure it doesnt happen.

Metal rods saved my life when I had them implanted on my spine when I was 12. First, the surgery very nearly killed me. Second, the rods detached from my spine a year and a half later and poked through my back, and I had to have part of each rod removed. Lastly, in large part because of these complications, I've had debilitating chronic back pain every day since I was 16...coming up on 20 years now. I'm still alive, but my life is DEFINITELY not worth everything I've been through. Think long and hard (if you can) before getting implants. I can't have my rods removed now because the bone of my spine has grown around what remains fused to my spine. If you can survive and have a decent life without the implant, don't get it. If you can't, do tons of research before getting it implanted. Be safe.

I'd gotten essure done about ten years ago. It was wonderful, and I was beyond thrilled. My super heavy and long periods were suddenly significantly lighter to the point of being negligible and way shorter. Around seven years later, all of a sudden, I was getting sharp pains in my abdomen, and my periods started getting heavy again, but at least they didn't last much longer. I started google searching to see what could be wrong (ugh, I know, terrible idea), and found a Facebook group about all the problems with Essure. I had no idea that it had been recalled, and assumed that it was a fake, overly sensational group. But, I kept reading what other women were saying. Almost all of them were expressing the same symptoms I had, and they'd gotten it around the same time I had. Some had even gotten pregnant while still having the device in them! I haven't had any other issues (that I know of), but I often wonder what could be wrong that I don't know about, and am slightly appalled that I had to find out via a Facebook group.
